landscape toppings
You can choose from a variety of landscape toppings for your shrub or perennial beds. Toppings can help to reduce moisture loss in your beds and they also help to keep the weeds away. They add a rich depth to your landscape. Of course it is important to add a good quality landscaping fabric to your
beds before adding your topping.
Wood based Landscape toppings for garden beds
Cedar mulch is one of our most popular wood mulches. It has a brown to redish color that compliments stone borders on you garden bed. Cedar mulch is quite fine so it settles each year, this allows you to add a fresh layer each spring to give your garden bed that just planted look. Bark nuggets are also quite popular but do not preserve moisture as well as cedar mulch. The nuggets do not settle each year and because they discolor and fade quickly they lose their visual appeal.

Rock toppings
C
rushed rundle rock is our most popular landscaping topping currently.
Rundle rock is a dark grey rock that
comes from Mount Rundle outside of Calgary.
The dark nature of the rock adds strength to your landscape. Rundle comes in many different sizes starting at 10mm and the size of your yard usually dictates the size of rundle to use. We would not recommend very large rundle rock for small garden beds. If you like to putter around and plant new each spring rundle is not the best topping to use as it is hard to move and has jagged edges. Rundle rock does attract the heat so watch for an increase in water consumption for your garden beds. Other common landscape toppings include, Salt and pepper rock, tan rock, washed round, and charmagne. Make sure you are very happy with the look of the topping before you make it part of your landscape. Removing unwanted stone can be costly and labor intensive.
